چکیده

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The etiopathogenesis of coronary artery ectasia (CAE) is not known completely. In most of the cases, CAE is associated with atherosclerosis; however, isolated CAE has a nonatherosclerotic mechanism. The association between atherosclerotic coronary artery disease and apelin has been examined in previous studies. However, the role of plasma apelin in isolated coronary artery ectasia has not been studied. In this study, we investigated the relationship between plasma apelin levels and isolated coronary artery ectasia. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The study population included a total of 54 patients. Twenty-six patients had isolated CAE (53.6±8.1 years); 28 patients with normal coronary arteries (51.6±8.8 years) and with similar risk factors and demographic characteristics served as the control group. Apelin levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunoassay kit. RESULTS Apelin level in the CAE group was significantly lower (apelin=0.181±0.159 ng/mL) than that in the control group (apelin=0.646±0.578 ng/mL) (p=0.033). Glucose, creatinine, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were not significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSION In this study, we showed that patients with isolated CAE have decreased plasma apelin levels compared with the control group. Based on the data, a relationship between plasma apelin and isolated CAE was determined.

Apelin Levels in Patients with Coronary Artery Ectasia

We read the article “Apelin Levels In Isolated Coronary Artery Ectasia” written by Bilik et al.1) The study aimed to determine the relationship between plasma apelin levels and isolated coronary artery ectasia. They concluded that patients with isolated coronary artery ectasia (CAE) have decreased plasma apelin levels compared with the control group. CAE is well known as an atherosclerotic proc...

The levels of asymmetric dimethylarginine in patients with isolated coronary artery ectasia

Aim: Although underlying mechanisms of coronary artery ectasia (CAE) are clearly unknown, endothelial dysfunction may be responsible for the coronary ectasia. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is the principal endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase and elevated levels of ADMA is considered to be a marker of endothelial dysfunction and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Accordingl...

The effect of diabetes mellitus on coronary artery ectasia: brief report

Background: Coronary artery ectasia (CAE) is dilatation of an arterial segment to a diameter at least 1.5 times that of the adjacent normal coronary artery. The incidence of coronary artery ectasia is distinct in different countries that can be found in 1.2% to 5% of angiographic examinations. Methods: This is a retrospective study that was conducted from September 2019 to February 2020 in Ker...

Is there any association between vitamin D levels and isolated coronary artery ectasia?

INTRODUCTION It has been postulated that low vitamin D levels are associated with coronary artery diseases. Coronary artery ectasia (CAE) is associated with atherosclerosis, congenital cardiac defects, immunological diseases and connective tissue diseases. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether there is an association between vitamin D and parathormone levels and isolated coronary arter...

DIFFUSE CORONARY ARTERIAL ECTASIA WITH HYPERTROPHIC CARDIOMYOPATHY

A 40 year old male, a known case of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, was admitted for catheterization. At catheterization and angiography, septum was hypertrophied to about 5cm and diffuse coronary artery aneurysm was revealed. We found no previous report of coronary artery aneurysm in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
